If you were preparing for the AWS SysOps Administrator Associate exam, the name on your certificate has changed. AWS has renamed the certification to AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer - Associate, taken through the new exam SOA-C03. If your study materials still say "SysOps", they are describing a retired exam. Here is what actually changed and what it means for you.

What changed

AWS states it directly: the certification is now "AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer - Associate (formerly known as AWS Certified SysOps Administrator - Associate)". The reason given is that AWS "renamed this certification as AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer - Associate to reflect the evolving nature of cloud operations and a shift in industry terminology".

The old exam has closed. AWS states "the last day to take the AWS Certified SysOps Administrator - Associate exam is September 29, 2025", and that "registration is now open for the updated version of this exam, now known as the AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer - Associate". Importantly, AWS notes "the name change will only apply to those who pass the latest exam version (SOA-C03)".

The exam itself

The format is familiar to anyone who looked at the old exam. SOA-C03 has "65 questions; either multiple choice or multiple response", a duration of "130 minutes", and a cost of "150 USD". The certification "is valid for 3 years".

One accuracy note: AWS does not publish a passing score on the certification page, so ignore any specific pass mark you see quoted elsewhere. If a number matters to your planning, it is not something the official page provides.

What it validates

The CloudOps Engineer certification validates, in AWS's words, "monitoring and maintaining AWS workloads, implementing security controls and networking concepts, performing business continuity procedures, and implementing cost and performance optimizations". AWS aims it at "individuals with approximately 1 year of experience deploying, managing, and operating workloads on AWS", in roles such as cloud operations specialist, cloud support engineer and cloud systems integration engineer.

In other words, the substance is cloud operations, exactly what the SysOps certification covered. This is a rename and refresh, not a new subject.

What it means for you

  • Study to SOA-C03, not the old exam. Any course, question bank or guide still labelled "SysOps Administrator" or targeting the previous exam predates this change. It is not useless, but confirm it against the current SOA-C03 exam guide before relying on it.
  • If you already hold the SysOps certification, you keep your credential. The new name applies to those who pass SOA-C03; your existing pass stands on its own terms, valid for its three-year period.
