Starting with Google Cloud certifications raises an immediate question: Cloud Digital Leader (CDL) or Associate Cloud Engineer (ACE) first? They sit at different levels. Cloud Digital Leader is a non-technical, knowledge-based entry certification with no hands-on requirement. Associate Cloud Engineer is a technical exam that recommends six months of hands-on Google Cloud experience. Choose by what you actually do, not by which sounds more impressive.

What each certification is

  • Cloud Digital Leader. Google describes it as "for anyone who wishes to demonstrate their knowledge of cloud computing basics and how Google Cloud products and services can be used to achieve an organization's goals". A holder "can articulate the capabilities of Google Cloud core products and services and how they benefit organizations". Its recommended experience is simply "experience collaborating with technical professionals", and prerequisites are "none". It is aimed squarely at business and non-technical roles.
  • Associate Cloud Engineer. Google describes this holder as someone who "deploys and secures applications, services, and infrastructure, monitors the operations of multiple projects, and maintains enterprise solutions". The exam covers setting up a cloud environment, planning and implementing a solution, ensuring successful operation, and configuring access and security. Its recommended experience is "6+ months hands on experience with Google Cloud". This is a doing certification, not a describing one.

The exams side by side

Both are multiple choice, but the shape differs.

  • Cloud Digital Leader: "50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions" in "90 minutes", "$99", offered in English, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese and French, valid for "3 years".
  • Associate Cloud Engineer: "50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions" in "2 hours", "$125", offered in English, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese, valid for "3 years".

Neither is a prerequisite for the other. Google states no prerequisites for either exam, so you are free to start with whichever matches you.

Which should you take first

  • Choose Cloud Digital Leader if you are in a business, sales, project or leadership role, you work alongside cloud teams rather than building on the platform yourself, or you want to prove foundational cloud literacy without hands-on practice. It is the natural first step for non-technical professionals.
  • Choose Associate Cloud Engineer if you have, or are building, real hands-on Google Cloud experience and you want a technical credential that proves you can deploy and operate solutions. If you already work in the console, starting here rather than with CDL avoids a certificate that understates your skills.

For a genuine beginner who is unsure whether a technical cloud path is for them, CDL is the low-risk way to test the water. For someone already doing the work, ACE is the credential employers actually screen for.
