If the Google Cloud Digital Leader (CDL) certification is on your list, there is a decision to make this week, not next month. Google states that the current version of the exam "will be available through August 11." After that, the CDL moves to a refreshed version that has been running in beta. For most candidates this is a small thing. For some, especially anyone who does not want to sit the exam in English, it is a real reason to book before the deadline. Here is how to decide.
What the Cloud Digital Leader is
The CDL is Google Cloud's entry-level certification, and unusually it is aimed at non-technical audiences. In Google's words, it is "for anyone who wishes to demonstrate their knowledge of cloud computing basics and how Google Cloud products and services can be used to achieve an organization's goals." There are no prerequisites, and the only recommended experience is "collaborating with technical professionals". That makes it popular with people in sales, delivery, product and management roles who work alongside cloud teams but do not build on the platform themselves.
The exam covers six areas: digital transformation with Google Cloud, data transformation, innovating with Google Cloud AI, modernising infrastructure and applications, trust and security, and scaling with Google Cloud operations.
The deadline, and what actually changes
Two dates matter. Registration for the CDL beta exam was open through 19 July 2026, so that window has closed. The current, non-beta version of the exam is available through 11 August 2026. In practical terms, 11 August is the last date to sit the familiar current version before Google transitions to the refreshed one.
A refresh is not a reinvention. The subject is the same cloud fundamentals, and the six areas above are unlikely to change beyond emphasis and updated product coverage. But the format details do differ between versions, and one of them is a genuine deciding factor.
Current version vs the refreshed one
Here is what Google publishes for each, and it is worth reading the differences rather than assuming they are trivial.
The current version, available through 11 August:
- 90 minutes
- 50 to 60 multiple choice questions
- 99 US dollars, plus tax where applicable
- Offered in English, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese and French
- Online-proctored or onsite-proctored
The beta version that has been trialling the refresh:
- 2 hours
- Around 75 multiple choice questions
- 59 US dollars during the beta, a discount on the 99-dollar retail price
- English only
- Online-proctored or onsite-proctored
The standout difference is language. The current version is available in five languages; the beta ran in English only. If you would rather sit the CDL in Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese or French, that is a concrete reason to book the current version before 11 August rather than wait. One caveat worth stating plainly: the beta figures describe the beta, and Google may adjust the length, question count, price or languages when the refreshed version goes fully live. Confirm the current details on Google's own certification page before you book.
Who should sit it before 11 August, and who can wait
Sit the current version now if any of these apply:
- You want to take it in a language other than English. This is the clearest case.
- You are already prepared. If you are ready this week, there is no benefit in waiting for a longer, English-only version.
- You prefer the shorter, familiar format. 90 minutes and 50 to 60 questions is a lighter sitting than the beta's 2 hours and roughly 75 questions.
You can comfortably wait if you are not yet ready, are happy to sit it in English, and would rather study against the refreshed content once it is fully published.
A note on renewal
The CDL is valid for three years. If you already hold it, you can renew from 180 days before your expiration date, and Google has confirmed that passing the beta exam renews an existing certification for three years. There is also a dedicated renewal exam: 45 minutes, 20 questions, 60 US dollars. If your CDL is approaching expiry, check your renewal window rather than re-sitting the full exam unnecessarily.
Practise under real exam conditions
Whichever version you choose, the CDL is a proctored, timed multiple choice exam, and the difference between a comfortable pass and a nervous one is usually familiarity with the format rather than the facts. Full, timed practice that mirrors the real sitting, proctored conditions, a running clock and multiple choice questions across all six areas, tells you whether you are ready far better than untimed reading. CandidatesPrep's simulator runs timed, scored mocks so you can rehearse the conditions as well as the content, and trainers preparing non-technical teams for the CDL can track readiness across a whole cohort.
The bottom line
The current Cloud Digital Leader exam is available only through 11 August 2026, then Google moves to a refreshed version. For most people the change is minor, but if you want to sit it in a language other than English, or you are ready now and prefer the shorter format, booking before 11 August is the sensible call. Whatever you decide, confirm the live details on Google's certification page, because the refreshed version's final format may differ from the beta.
